Yoga, silence or surfing retreat: which is right for you?
Three words, three worlds. A yoga retreat brings to mind the mat, the breath and sun salutations. A silent retreat, deep calm and inner focus. A surf retreat, waves, effort and salty air. All three promise, in their own way, a break from everyday life. But they don't necessarily match the same desires, or the same moments in life. Here is a quick overview to help you choose.
The yoga retreat: the happy medium
What a day looks like
Most often, one session in the morning, another in the late afternoon, and free time in between. Depending on the retreat, there may also be meditation, breathwork, workshops or walks. Meals are often simple and shared.
The atmosphere
Caring and structured. The days have a rhythm without being rigid. The group comes together easily around the practice.
Who is it for?
- Anyone who wants to discover or deepen their yoga practice.
- People looking for a balance between gentle movement and rest.
- First retreats: it is often a reassuring format.
What to check
The yoga style taught (hatha, vinyasa, yin…), the number of sessions per day and the level indicated. Our guide "How to prepare for a yoga retreat?" helps you get ready.
The silent retreat: deep calm
What a day looks like
Meditation sessions, walking, sometimes gentle yoga, and above all no conversation, either total or partial. Some retreats include guided sharing times, others don't. Phones are often put aside.
The atmosphere
Deeply calm. The first hours can be surprising: you suddenly notice your inner noise. Then, for many people, a kind of peace settles in.
Who is it for?
- Anyone overloaded with demands who needs to turn the volume down.
- People going through a period of reflection or at a turning point.
- Solo travellers: no one expects you to make conversation.
What to check
The level of silence expected, the length, the place of meditation and whether guidance is provided. For a first time, a short format or partial silence is often easier.
The surf retreat: the energy of the ocean
What a day looks like
Supervised surf sessions, often timed around the tides and conditions, and time to recover. Many surf retreats combine surfing with yoga, to warm up or stretch.
The atmosphere
Lively and joyful. Shared effort, wipeouts and first waves quickly create bonds. The pace depends on the ocean, which calls for a little flexibility.
Who is it for?
- Anyone who recharges by moving.
- Lovers of the ocean and the great outdoors.
- People who want to learn something new, with an element of challenge.
What to check
The level required, supervision, equipment provided, sea conditions and how comfortable you are in the water. Being able to swim is generally essential; check the prerequisites on the listing.
How to choose between the three?
Based on your energy
- Tired: gentle yoga or silence, rather than surfing.
- Tense or scattered: silence or yoga.
- Full of drive: surfing, possibly combined with yoga.
Based on how you relate to others
- Keen to meet people: surfing or yoga.
- In need of calm: silence.
Based on how you relate to your body
- Gentle movement: yoga.
- Stillness and attention: silence.
- Effort and sensations: surfing.
Still undecided?
Some retreats combine several approaches: yoga and surfing, yoga and meditation, days of silence within a longer stay. It is a good way to sample different practices without putting all your eggs in one basket.
There is no wrong choice
Yoga, silence or surfing: no retreat is better than another. The right one is the one that meets your needs right now.
