How to choose your first wellness retreat?
There comes a moment when the urge becomes too strong to put off: the moment you tell yourself, "this time, I'm going". Choosing your first wellness retreat is a small event. You often have high expectations, a little apprehension, and so many options that you don't know where to start. Rather than a list of criteria, we offer the opposite here: the most common mistakes people make when choosing, and how to avoid them. A simple way to get off on the right foot.
Mistake no. 1: choosing from a photo
An infinity pool, a sunset, a yoga room bathed in light: images make you want to go, and that's normal. But a photo tells you nothing about the programme, the pace, the group atmosphere or how you will feel once you are there.
What to do instead: let the photo draw you in, then read the whole listing. The outline of a typical day will tell you far more.
Mistake no. 2: forgetting why you are going
People sometimes choose a retreat because it is trendy, because a friend loved it, or because the practice seems like it should "do you good". But if you are exhausted, a very intense sporty stay may tire you out even more. If you need calm, a very social programme may weigh on you.
What to do instead: before you start looking, write down in one sentence what you need. Rest, calm, movement, discovering a practice, a break from screens? That sentence will become your compass.
Mistake no. 3: going for too long, too soon
A week of silence or a multi-day trek can be a wonderful experience. For a first time, it is also a lot all at once.
What to do instead: start with a short format, such as a weekend or a stay of three or four days. You will find out what suits you, and you can stay longer next time.
Mistake no. 4: underestimating the journey
You choose the ideal place, then realise it takes a whole day to get there. On a short stay, the journey can eat into much of the effect you were hoping for.
What to do instead: compare the length of the journey with the length of the stay. For a first retreat, a place you can reach in a few hours, ideally by train, is often the most enjoyable.
Mistake no. 5: choosing an overloaded programme
Three sessions a day, workshops, excursions: on paper, the more the better. In reality, many people discover on retreat that what they were missing most was free time.
What to do instead: check that there are activity-free slots in the day. Rest is part of the experience, not time wasted.
Mistake no. 6: not asking questions
People sometimes hesitate to write to the organiser, for fear of being a bother or seeming inexperienced. The result: they set off with doubts about the level, accommodation, meals or equipment.
What to do instead: ask all your questions before you decide. Your level of practice, a special diet, a single room, the cancellation conditions: nothing is too small. The answer will also tell you a lot about the organiser.
Mistake no. 7: expecting a transformation
You sometimes read that a retreat will "change your life". That is a heavy expectation to carry. If you arrive thinking everything must transform within a few days, you may be disappointed, or spend the whole stay watching yourself.
What to do instead: arrive with curiosity. Above all, a retreat offers a space: to slow down, practise, rest and reflect. What you take from it will come in its own time, sometimes long after you get home.
So, how do you choose?
With these mistakes in mind, choosing becomes simpler:
- Write your intention in one sentence.
- Choose a short stay and an easy-to-reach place.
- Read the programme and check that it leaves free time.
- Look at the level, accommodation, meals and conditions.
- Ask the organiser your questions.
- Listen to your gut between the two or three stays left on your list.
If you want to go further, our guide "How to choose your first wellness retreat?" covers each of these points in detail.
The best part is getting started
Your first retreat doesn't need to be perfect. It is also a way of learning what does you good: a pace, a practice, a landscape, a format. The next ones will be all the better suited to you. Browse the retreats, let your intention guide you, and click "View activity" to discover the one that makes you want to take the leap.
