The most beautiful destinations for a wellness retreat in Europe
Within a relatively small area, Europe packs in an astonishing variety of landscapes: oceans and seas, mountains, countryside, islands, forests and lakes. Enough to find, often without travelling very far, a setting that makes you want to slow down. Rather than a ranking, we offer a journey through types of landscape, to help you picture the retreat that suits you. And because you don't always need to fly to feel somewhere else, we start with France.
France, a country of a thousand settings
The Atlantic coast
Long beaches, dunes, pine forests, ever-changing light: the Atlantic coast, from Brittany to the Basque Country, is a natural setting for yoga facing the ocean, walks on the sand and, of course, surfing. Out of season, it takes on a wilder feel, ideal for refocusing.
The mountains
The Alps, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Vosges, the Jura: France has many mountain ranges, each with its own character. They are a natural home for active retreats, such as hiking, trekking or bivouacs, but also for silent stays at altitude, far from the hustle and bustle.
The countryside
Vineyards, hedged farmland, hills, old stone buildings: the French countryside is a perfect refuge for retreats focused on rest, gentle detox or yoga. Its great advantage is often how easy it is to reach from the cities.
Forests and rivers
Vast forests, gorges, lakes and rivers invite slow walking, meditation, kayaking or simple contemplation.
Southern Europe: light and mildness
The Iberian Peninsula
In both Portugal and Spain, you will find Atlantic coastlines popular with surfers, sunny countryside and more hidden landscapes. The light and the mild climate attract many yoga lovers and fans of sunny retreats, especially in spring and autumn.
Italy
Hills, olive groves, northern lakes, coastlines and islands: Italy combines varied landscapes with a real art of living. It is easy to picture a slow-paced retreat where food and the beauty of the surroundings are part of the experience.
Greece and the Mediterranean islands
Turquoise sea, white villages, coastal paths: the Mediterranean islands naturally evoke a pause. Bear in mind the summer heat and high-season crowds, though; the milder months are often better for rest.
Europe's mountains
Beyond the French ranges, the Alps stretch across several countries, and other ranges, such as the Dolomites or the mountains of Central Europe, offer wide open spaces. The mountains lend themselves well to stays that combine effort and contemplation: hiking by day, silence and rest in the evening.
Northern Europe: forests, lakes and deep silence
The Nordic countries bring to mind deep forests, countless lakes, long summer days and the low winter light. It is a destination that speaks to anyone seeking vastness, calm and a simple relationship with nature.
How to choose among all these destinations?
Start with your refuge landscapes
Where have you felt good in the past? By the water, at altitude, in a forest? That is often the best indication.
Compare travel time and length of stay
The shorter the stay, the more sense it makes to stay close. For a weekend, a destination in France that you can reach by train lets you make the most of your time there. A more distant destination makes more sense for a longer stay.
Think about the season
Southern heat in summer, cool mountain air, northern light in winter: the same place can offer a very different experience depending on the time of year.
Match the place to the practice
Surfing on the Atlantic coasts, trekking in the mountains, silence in a forest or the countryside, yoga almost anywhere: some destinations suit certain activities better.
Think about the footprint of your trip
Choosing a nearby destination you can reach by train also means less travel fatigue and less impact. One more reason to (re)discover what lies close to home.
The right place is the one that calms you
There is no such thing as a perfect destination in absolute terms. The most beautiful destination for a retreat is the one where you will feel free to slow down. Browse retreats and expeditions by activity or by region, and click "View activity" to discover the places that appeal to you.
