How to prepare for a yoga retreat?
You have chosen your yoga retreat and the dates are getting closer. Should you train beforehand? What should you pack? How can you arrive in the right frame of mind? Good news: a yoga retreat doesn't require complicated preparation. A few simple steps in the weeks and days before are often enough to make the most of your stay.
A few weeks before
Reread the programme
Go back to the retreat listing: number of sessions per day, yoga style, timetable, additional activities. This lets you know what to expect and prepare both your body and your schedule.
Find out about the style taught
Hatha, vinyasa, yin, ashtanga: each style has its own rhythm. If you don't know it, you could attend a class near you or follow a short online session to get familiar with it. It isn't compulsory, but it can be reassuring.
Practise a little, without pushing
If you already practise, carry on at your usual pace. If you are a beginner, a few gentle sessions before you leave can help your body get used to the postures. The aim is not to arrive "at the right level", but to avoid suddenly facing several hours of practice a day.
Tell the organiser about your situation
An injury, a pregnancy, a particular health condition? Let the organiser know before the stay, and ask a health professional for advice if needed. A teacher who is informed can offer you adaptations.
The week before
Slow down gradually
Rather than arriving exhausted after an overloaded week, try to ease off a few days beforehand: go to bed a little earlier, use screens less in the evening, schedule fewer appointments. The transition will be gentler.
Organise your time away
Let your loved ones and colleagues know, set up an automatic reply on your email, and deal with whatever can be dealt with before you leave. The fewer loose ends you leave, the easier it will be to switch off.
Check your journey
Train times, route, expected arrival time: prepare everything in advance so you don't start your stay in a rush.
What to pack?
For your practice
- Comfortable clothes that are easy to layer.
- Your mat, if the organiser doesn't provide one or if you prefer your own.
- A small blanket or throw for relaxation and meditation.
- Possibly a strap or a block, if you are used to using them.
For the rest of the stay
- A warm jumper, even in summer: mornings and evenings can be cool.
- Walking shoes, if walks are planned.
- A water bottle.
- A notebook and pen, to write down what you experience.
- A book, rather than screens.
Always check the list provided by the organiser, which may include items specific to the venue or the programme.
On site: a few good habits
Listen to your body
A retreat is not a competition. If a posture doesn't suit you, adapt it or rest. Teachers often remind you: the right practice is the one that respects your limits on the day.
Stay hydrated and rest
Several sessions a day can be tiring, especially at first. Drink regularly, use free time to rest, and sleep as much as you need.
Put your phone down
Even partly: no screens during meals, notifications off, a set time in the day to check your messages. That is often where the real break begins.
Stay open
You will enjoy some sessions more than others. Keep a kind curiosity, including towards whatever surprises you.
The right mindset
Arrive with no performance goal and no specific expectations. A yoga retreat doesn't have to "transform" anything; first and foremost, it is a space to practise, slow down and take time for yourself. What you get out of it will also depend on how open you are to whatever comes.
And afterwards?
If possible, plan a quiet day when you get back rather than going straight into a busy week. Note down what did you good during the stay: a practice, a time of day, a habit. These are the small things you can keep in your daily life.
In short
Preparing for a yoga retreat mostly means rereading the programme, practising a little without pushing, slowing down before you leave, packing simply and arriving with an open mind. Haven't chosen yet? Browse the yoga retreats and click "View activity" to discover the ones that suit you.
