How to choose your first wellness retreat?

You have wanted to do it for a long time, but never taken the plunge. A wellness retreat means a few days to slow down, take care of yourself and step out of your daily routine. But if you have never been on one, the choice can seem overwhelming: yoga, meditation, silence, detox, hiking, a weekend or a whole week… How do you know what will suit you? This guide helps you ask the right questions, in the right order, so that your first experience is a success.

Start with your intention

The first question is not "where?" but "why?". Take a few minutes to put into words what you are looking for.

  • To rest: you are tired, you need to sleep, to walk, to have nothing planned.
  • To refocus: you want calm, time to think, perhaps a little meditation.
  • To move: you want nature, gentle or more intense effort, fresh air.
  • To discover a practice: yoga, meditation or breathwork appeals to you and you want to try it with proper guidance.
  • To get away from screens: above all, you want distance from your phone and constant demands.

There is no right or wrong answer. But a clear intention will stop you from choosing a stay that looks superb in photos but is poorly suited to how you feel right now.

Choose an accessible format

A short stay to begin with

For a first time, a weekend or a stay of two to four days is often a good starting point. You discover the rhythm of a retreat without committing to a long period. If you enjoy the experience, you can consider a longer stay next time.

A gentle pace

Look at the programme day by day. How many sessions? What time does the day start? Is there free time left? For a first retreat, a programme that leaves room for rest is usually more enjoyable than a packed schedule.

A practice open to beginners

If the stay includes yoga, meditation or a sporting activity, check the level indicated. A listing that says "all levels" or "beginners welcome" is reassuring. If in doubt, ask the organiser before making up your mind.

Think about distance and travel

A retreat begins the moment you set off. If you spend a whole day travelling for a three-day stay, much of the benefit may evaporate. For a first experience, favour a place that is easy to reach from home, ideally by train or within a few hours' drive. France offers a wide variety of landscapes: sea, mountains, countryside, forest. You don't necessarily need to go far to feel somewhere else.

Alone, as a couple or with friends?

Solo

Going alone can feel daunting, but it is often the format that leaves the most room for yourself. Small-group retreats let you meet other people, with no obligation to share more than you want to.

With someone

Going with someone close to you can be reassuring. Just make sure you want the same thing: someone who wants silence and someone who wants to party will both have a hard time on the same stay.

Read the listing carefully

Before deciding, take the time to read each listing in full. Here is what to look out for:

  • The programme: activities, timetable, free time.
  • Accommodation: single or shared room, bathroom, bedding.
  • Meals: type of cuisine, dietary needs catered for, meals included or not.
  • What is included: transfers, equipment, optional activities.
  • The organiser: their background, how they present the retreat, the group size.
  • Cancellation conditions: read them before committing, so you know what happens if you end up unable to go.

If any information is missing, don't hesitate to ask for it. A reliable organiser takes the time to reply.

Listen to your gut feeling

Beyond the criteria, there is intuition. The photos, the way the organiser talks about their stay, the tone of the description: all of this gives you an idea of the atmosphere. If a retreat appeals to you without your quite knowing why, that is often a good sign. If, on the other hand, something makes you uneasy, it is better to move on to the next one.

Prepare without pressure

A first retreat requires no special preparation. A few days beforehand, you can start slowing down: go to bed a little earlier, cut down on screen time, pack your bag without rushing. Arrive with curiosity rather than specific expectations. A retreat does not "fix" everything; above all, it offers a space to breathe.

In short

To choose your first wellness retreat, start with your intention, favour a short format with a gentle pace, limit the travel and read each listing carefully. The rest is yours to discover on site. When you are ready, browse the available retreats and click "View activity" to discover the ones that speak to you.
