How to choose the right retreat destination?

The destination is not just a backdrop. It shapes a retreat's atmosphere, its pace, the activities on offer and even the way you rest. A week facing the ocean feels nothing like a few days in a forest or up in the mountains. Rather than choosing on the strength of a beautiful photo alone, here are a few pointers to help you find the place that suits you, in France or elsewhere.

Start with what does you good

Before you look at a map, think back to the places where you felt good. By the water? In the mountains? In a quiet village? Surrounded by trees? These memories are often more reliable than any list of destinations. Everyone has their own "refuge" landscapes, and a retreat is a good opportunity to return to them.

The main types of landscape

The sea and the ocean

The seaside brings to mind the horizon, salty air and the sound of the waves. It is a popular setting for yoga, meditation and surfing. Depending on the season, the atmosphere varies a great deal: lively in summer, wilder and calmer out of season.

The mountains

Altitude, wide open spaces, fresh air: the mountains lend themselves well to active retreats such as hiking, trekking or bivouacs, but also to silent retreats and time out. Bear in mind that the weather can change quickly and that the terrain demands physical effort.

The countryside

Fields, vineyards, old stone buildings, villages: the countryside offers a soothing setting, often ideal for rest, detox and simple cooking. It is also a good option for a weekend, when the place is easy to reach.

The forest

Shade, silence, the scent of the undergrowth: the forest invites you to slow down. It pairs well with walking, meditation and nature stays.

Lakes and rivers

They offer a middle ground between water and inland nature, sometimes with activities such as kayaking or swimming, depending on the season.

Think about the journey

The rule of proportion

The shorter the retreat, the shorter the journey should be. For a weekend, a few hours by road or train at most. For a week, a longer journey can be worth it.

How you get there

A place you can reach by train lets you arrive more rested and start disconnecting during the trip itself. Also check the distance between the station and the venue, and whether a transfer is available.

Go far, or stay close?

You don't always need to travel far to feel somewhere else. France offers a wide variety of landscapes, often reachable without flying. A faraway destination can have its charm, but it takes more time, more energy and more organisation.

Take the season into account

The same destination can change completely depending on the time of year.

  • Heat or cool air: some places are pleasant in spring and stifling in midsummer.
  • Crowds: out of season, places are often quieter, which can make rest easier.
  • Light: short winter days invite introspection, long summer evenings outdoor activities.
  • Available activities: surfing, hiking and kayaking depend on conditions. Check with the organiser.

Match the destination to the type of retreat

  • Yoga and meditation: almost any setting works; choose the one that calms you.
  • Silence: an isolated, quiet place away from noise is often best.
  • Detox and rest: countryside and forest offer a gentle, undemanding environment.
  • Surfing: the coast, of course, with conditions suited to your level.
  • Trekking, trail running, bivouacs: mountains or wide natural spaces.
  • Kayaking: rivers, lakes or the coastline, depending on the format.

Look at the place itself

Beyond the region, the exact venue matters a lot: an isolated estate, a village house, a mountain hut, a camp in the heart of nature. Look at photos of the practice spaces, the rooms and the outdoor areas. Read the description of the immediate surroundings: are there walking paths, a spot to swim, shops nearby?

Don't forget your comfort

Some people love complete isolation; others feel more at ease with a village within walking distance. Some cope well with heat, others don't. Be honest with yourself: the ideal destination is the one where you will feel safe and comfortable.

In short

To choose the right retreat destination, start with the landscapes that do you good, match the distance to the length of your stay, take the season into account and match the place to the type of retreat. Browse retreats and expeditions by region or by activity, then click "View activity" to discover each place in detail.
